Behind the texture of these Couple Pendants lies a technical mistake from my earlier work. During the COVID period, I became fascinated with carving intricate wax bracelets and bangles, focusing on detailed textures and hidden messages on the back. One of these bracelets was created as a gift for my flatmate, meant to cheer her up during a difficult time.
However, in my excitement over the intricate details, I made an amateur mistake. After the lost-wax casting process, the varying thicknesses of the metal caused the bangle to become fragile, as the tension wasn't evenly distributed. As a result, all the bracelets from this series eventually broke in some way or another.
Years later, when my flatmate asked me to be a witness at her marriage registration, I remembered the broken bracelet. To celebrate her new chapter, I created these two pendants as a congratulatory gift for her wedding, while also leaving behind a small message from the past—something to always brighten her day.
I believe the idea of leaving small messages at the back of jewellery pieces is not new to anyone, but as a psychologist, I know how important it is to sometimes hear words of encouragement and support. I really love the idea of secret messages in jewellery, whether they are actual words on the back or something symbolic.
