How to Reduce Tarnishing and Clean Tarnished Jewellery
Silver tarnish is a natural result of oxidation, primarily caused by the copper content in sterling silver. Tarnish can also occur due to contact with skin, perfumes, moisturizers, and other substances. Fortunately, there are several effective ways to reduce tarnishing and clean your silver pieces.
Reducing Tarnish
  • Storage: Store your jewelry in a sealed container or plastic bag to limit exposure to air and moisture.
  • Moisture Control: Include a silica gel sachet, a piece of chalk, or activated charcoal in the container to absorb moisture and oxygen.
Cleaning Options
If you’d prefer to avoid commercial cleaners, here are a few simple homemade solutions. These methods work best with warm liquids, but ensure proper ventilation and avoid inhaling any fumes.
  1. Salt and Vinegar Solution:
    • Mix 1/4 teaspoon of cooking salt with 1 cup of household vinegar.
    • Submerge the silver in the solution for up to an hour, or until clean.
  2. Citric Acid Solution:
    • Dissolve 1/2 teaspoon of citric acid in 1 cup of water.
    • Submerge the silver in the solution for up to an hour.
    • Note: Avoid letting the solution come into contact with a stainless steel sink, as it may stain.
  3. Aluminum Foil and Salt Method:
    • Line a small dish with aluminum foil and add water with a pinch of salt (acts as an electrolyte).
    • Submerge the silver in the solution for up to an hour.
  4. Neutralizing Acidic Solutions:
    • After cleaning, dip your silver in a neutralizing solution made from 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda dissolved in 1 cup of water.
    • Leave it in the solution for about one minute, then rinse thoroughly.
Note: The small amount of chemicals produced during cleaning is safe to dispose of down the sink.
Cleaning Solid Pieces
For solid silver surfaces, such as rings or larger items:
  • Create a paste using baking soda and a small amount of water.
  • Use a soft toothbrush to gently apply the paste to the silver. Avoid pressing too hard to prevent scratching the metal.
  • Alternatively, you can use toothpaste in the same way.
  • Rinse thoroughly after cleaning.
